PT. Berau Coal is very conscious of its environmental commitments and the need to return the environment back to its original state. Procedures, systems and a programme of regular monitoring are in place to ensure that pollutants are controlled and maintained within acceptable levels. Stockpiling of topsoil is managed carefully and rehabilitation is carried out on a regular basis, scheduled into the mining plans and is in accordance with the environmental management plan approved by the Indonesian government. Overburden is backfilled as soon possible to keep the impact of the mining activity to a minimum.
Native trees are planted in the areas that have been mined-out and run-off water is collected in settling ponds to protect the rivers from the pollution.
The company also has programmes in-place to protect and restore natural flora and fauna in the areas of its activities.
